If a player touches an opponent's piece, they have to seize that piece. A participant who wishes to touch a bit only to adjust it within the board need to initial announce the intention, normally by indicating “modify”.Pawns can only seize one particular square diagonally before them. They will under no circumstances transfer or seize backward.
